Chinese Standards

Chinese standards in the international language English

As the second largest import economy in the world, every year China imports goods worth over $1.5T,  notably electrical machinery, mineral fuels, computers, medical apparatus and automobiles. The technical standards governing these products are only published in Mandarin Chinese and can pose challenges to companies exporting to China, especially since not all standards adopt the requirements from ISO, IEC or other international standards developers.

There are four levels of Chinese standards covering all sectors from engineering to banking: 1) National Standards, 2) Industry Standards, 3) Local Standards and 4) Enterprise Standards. Standards may be mandatory or recommended (denoted by “/T”), with mandatory standards setting legal requirements for the protection of health, personal property and security. In China, the Standardization Administration of the People’s Republic of China (SAC) is the national standards body responsible for the development of all Chinese national standards.
